LEVELED with allegations of malfeasance and nepotism, the brother of Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha is being investigated over his son’s appointment into the army.
Gen. Preecha Chan-ocha, who is the Permanent Secretary for Defense, is now under investigation after the Association for the Protection of the Constitution’s Secretary-General, Srisuwan Janya, petitioned the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the office of the Ombudsman to investigate the case.
According to The Bangkok Post, Preecha’s son, Patipat, had been appointed as an officer in the 3rd Army as an acting sub-lieutenant handling civil affairs, drawing a monthly salary of 15,000 baht (US$428).
Srisuwan alleged that Preecha had abused his power to secure his son’s appointment, a violation under the country’s Anti-Corruption Act 1999, its Administrative Procedure Act 1996, and the Defense Ministry’s code of ethics, the paper reported.
Preecha was also alleged to have breached the National Legislative Assembly’s (NLA’s) code of ethics in his involvement in conflicts of interests and abuse of power.
“Gen. Preecha’s action not only breaks the law, but it also goes against intentions announced by the National Council for Peace and Order [NCPO] when it seized power to deal with politicians’ bad behavior. The NCPO should not repeat what politicians did,” Srisiwan was quoted saying.
Calling on the NLA’s ethics committee to probe the case, Srisuwan also asked Patipat to resign from his job.
Preecha on Monday defended Patipat’s appointment, saying the latter had been recruited according to proper procedures, as his son had the credentials and experience to fill the post.
Patipat is said to have experience working in Public Relations at the Petroleum Authority of Thailand, and also has a degree in Communications.
