Thirayuth Boonmee is a well-known academic. He used to regularly speak to the media about politics. Chang Noi on Thirayuth in 1999:
Thirayuth Boonmee was a leader of the student revolt against military dictatorship in October 1973. Now he has become a kind of lay abbot. He immerses himself in the texts and practices of modern Thai society and politics. He emerges from his ivory kuti once a year to preach a sermon guiding his followers through the world of political illusions in search of a better future. Through the 1990s, he has been largely optimistic about the decline of the military, the growth of political activism, the reform of the constitution. His sermons say: get involved.

Since political parties under Thaksin consecutively won power, Thaksin has been able to widely expand his base of red shirts and mobilised a large number of people to take part in political rallies.
It can be said that Thaksin is one of the three most influential political figures since 1957. The other two are former military strongman Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat and Gen Prem Tinsulanonda.
Thaksin has gained more and more political influence through his populist policies and his swift actions in tackling some problems particularly illicit drugs.
The people are now generally divided into two groups – the red shirts and the conservatives. The people in the two groups hold to strong ideological conflicts.
Mr Thirayuth believes the red shirts or the grass roots are now in an advantageous position and the conservatives are at a disadvantage.
While the red shirts claim legitimacy through elections in a democratic system, the conservatives’ opinions are limited to the nation, the monarchy, history and traditions.
The conservatives’ outlook puts them on the defensive, while the grass roots are open more widely to new innovations backed by financial support and a wide range of resources.
Mr Thirayuth believes there is no way out of this situation in the short term. The grass roots believe they have long been taken advantage of by the conservatives, who are strongly loyal to institutions which have long existed throughout the nation’s history.
Both sides believe the other side is trying to eradicate them, he said.
In this situation, Mr Thirayuth’s suggestion is for Thaksin and the Pheu Thai Party to realise that time is on their side and it is not necessary to do anything which can lead to a confrontation between the two conflicting groups.

Mr Thirayuth said he personally believes Thaksin has no true intentions of building democracy for the grass roots.
Thaksin is more a marketing leader than a democracy leader. Thaksin’s aim is more to make the grass roots his clients than to make them a sustainable foundation of the Thai economy.
In fact, the current conflict in the country derives from Thaksin’s insatiable desire for wealth and power, he said.
