Poll: Most want fully elected senate
Nearly two-thirds of people feel that all senators should be elected, but that family members of MPs should not be allowed to run for seats in the upper house, according to the results of a Nida Poll published on Wednesday.
The pollstr surveyed 1,249 people, aged 18 and over, throughout the country on Aug 26-27.
Asked about the make-up of the Senate, 63.65% said all of the senators should be chosen by election in order to truly represent the people; 25.78% said one half of the senators should be elected and the other half appointed through a selection process to ensure a balance in the Senate; 5.44% thought all should be screened through a selection process to get quality senators; and 2.40% said the Senate should be abolished. The rest had no comment.
