Yingluck Shinawatra to meet Queen on Britain trip

Yingluck Shinawatra, the Thai prime minister, will meet the Queen on her official visit to the UK this week, as she attempts to burnish her monarchist credentials within her deeply divided homeland.

Ms Yingluck's audience with the Queen is rare event for a non-Commonwealth leader - her brother Thaksin Shinawatra was not received on his trips as prime minister - and is a boon for a nation where the Thai royal family is revered. Mr Thaksin was overthrown in a military coup in 2006 in part because of the threat he was perceived to pose to the power and status of the king.

The timing of Ms Yingluck's meeting with the Queen is particularly significant because later this month her ruling Pheu Thai party faces a censure debate in the Thai parliament.

Abhisit Vejjajiva, the leader of the Democrats, did not receive an audience with the Queen when he visited the UK while Prime Minister between 2008-2011, despite having been born in Newcastle upon Tyne and educated at Eton and Oxford.

Thailand remains deeply divided between supporters of Mr Thaksin, who many believe rules the country by proxy, and a wide-ranging opposition led by the Democrat Party. But the globe-trotting Ms Yingluck, who has made 30 trips to 17 countries in her 14 months in power, has helped restore confidence in the country following the deadly clashes between supporters of Mr Thaksin and his opponents that engulfed Bangkok in 2010.

"No matter how we may disagree about politics, Thai people should be proud that this government has brought back the dignity and integrity of Thailand onto the world's radar," said Pasan Teparak, the Thai ambassador to Britain.

Ms Yingluck is also scheduled to meet David Cameron during her visit, which is designed to boost UK-Thai trade and tourism links. Thailand has the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and with almost 850,000 Britons going on holiday there last year, tourism contributes to around 6% of the country's GDP.

Jag delar inte er negativa inställning både till Yingluck och Drottningbesöket, jag är glad att Thailand åter har fått välja sin PM i ett fritt och demokratiskt val och jag tycker dessutom att det var extra kul att det blev den första kvinnliga Premiärministern i landets historia, jag önskar henne lycka till i London, och jag hoppas att hon kommer att framstå som en bra Ambassdör för sitt land.
