In the Kingdom of Thailand, politics is family business, which means these powerful families dominate politics, from within and without, upside down and inside out.

Therefore it also means these families dominate Thailand - well, along with the military, the mafia, the establishment and some other folks of course.

The purpose of any business? Money and power, naturally. Is this the picture of a healthy democracy? No. It's an oligarchy masquerading as democracy - a loose and messy oligarchy at that.

How has the Thai political landscape come to this? The answer is simple, patronage democracy.

The Thai voting public is divided into two groups. There are those who make their own decisions. Then there are those bound by allegiances.

Many of the political families own enclaves, or fiefdoms - the districts, the provinces and the regions that belong to them _ and are not dissimilar to the lords and barons of feudalistic times. The people of these fiefdoms owe allegiance to their lords.

How could they not? The lords, or the MPs, take care of them.

Need to borrow some quick cash? Done. Want your newly graduated son hired by a certain company? Done. Want daughter to attend a particular school? Done. Need pesky bookie to back off a little? Done. Parties and festivals to keep the ''serfs'' happy? Done. Fat envelopes for weddings and funerals? Done and done. And the latest trend - populist polices? Done.

So when election time comes, the hua-kanaan, or canvasser _ the ears, eyes and bulging biceps of the lords and barons, many also heads of the district administrative offices _ will make sure that the X is marked in the right box. What happens if a district votes against its patron? The many political assassinations, failed and successful, before and after the July 3 general election, are examples of the extreme repercussions.

Bear in mind, the above is a generalisation. There are always exceptions to the rule. But if we aim to understand a phenomenon, we must theorise. The make-up of the Thai parliament and political landscape, however, should be proof enough for this theory.

Jag träffade i förra veckan förre CFO´n för Bangkok Post. Vi diskuterade just frågan om att Bangkok Post tar mer och mer ställning i frågor där man kommenterar frågor som tidigare man skulle hållt sig borta från. Detta är ett exempel på artikel som tidigare hade varit svår eller omöjlig att skriva.

CFO´n sa att tidningar under de senaste åren känner att dom har större pressfrihet än tidigare. Detta sagt av en person med mycket stor insikt i Thailändsk media.

Tyvärr för jesus-maffian så stämmer detta inte med deras mantra om att det blivit sämre sedan PM Abhisit kom till makten.

Jag litar mer på min vän som haft och fortfarande har höga positioner inom media.

Samma här. Artikeln motsvarar även min syn till i princip 100%. I varje fall vad avser den del av väljarna som är "bound by allegiances".

PY: I think that's ridiculous. Rural people in their communities have always had their patrons. They can always have some influence in this group and that group. I have my view, my patron. I look up to you, you take care of me. You are at the provincial level and you reach the Bangkok level, so I can get it to the Bangkok level only through you. This has been true for a long time.

Gissar att Voranai och Young tycker rätt lika i mycket om detta.

Jag håller också ofta med Vorani i det som han skriver, och jag uppskattar honom eftersom han oftast håller sig neutral och ser båda sidors brister, och jag brukar själv länka till hans artiklar ibland.

Och han har helt rätt i att familjer i överklassen har för mycket inflytande och makt över både folk och politik.

Bara det att han gillas både av forumets lantisar och Bangkok elit är väl ett gott betyg, han påminner en del om vår egen Wille på det sättet.

Hej

Jag utesluter inte alls att folk påverkas av andra faktorer, det skulle förklara varför t.ex fattiga i syd röstade på det parti som deras plågoandar Generalerna säger till dom att rösta på, för någon annan vettig förklaring till detta fenomen kan jag inte se.

Men jag tror att man ska vara försiktig med att ha säkra åsikter om varför folk röstar som dom gör, det är mycket som spelar in, och folk är definitivt inte dumma.
