Satirtecknare intagen på förhör av militären.

The Thai junta has summoned a renowned cartoonist from Thairath, the biggest circulation newspaper in Thailand, for ‘attitude adjustment’, saying that he distorted facts about the regime.

The junta’s National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) summoned Sakda Sae-eaw, known by his penname of Sia, a cartoonist whose column is on Thairath page 3, to report to the Royal Thai Army Headquarters in Bangkok at 10 am on Sunday, 4 October 2015.

According to the BBC Thai Service, Sakda complied with the order and went to the Army Headquarters at 10 am along with Suntorn Thasai, the advertising editor of Thairath. The two were held briefly for a discussion with military personnel who did not reveal their identities.

Sakda told BBC Thai that the officers told him that his cartoons distorted facts about the NCPO and might affect national security.

“The NCPO thinks that the cartoons which I published distorted certain facts because of a lack of information, so they summoned [me] for attitude adjustment to create better understanding about the NCPO,” BBC quoted Sakda as saying. “This is the first time that [the NCPO] directly commented that my work distorted facts, but I confirmed that I simply published work in accordance with the news that appeared in Thairath.”

He mentioned that although his cartoons have to go through editorial procedures before publication, he has to be more careful from now on.

Sakda added that even though the NCPO did not force him to sign any documents during the talks, the officers informed him that that the NCPO has a committee which monitors and screens information.

“I’m not that worried. I’m a member of the press and things which I published were based on facts and were well intended,” said the cartoonist from Thairath.

In the aftermath of the 2014 coup d’état, Sakda was one of many media people who were summoned together for two weeks of reconciliation activities organised by the coup-makers. However, this is the first time that he has been summoned individually by the regime.

Det är som sagt lågt till tak i diktaturens Thailand och detta har nu lett till att en satir tecknare verksam på Thairath nu togs in för förhör och s.k "attitydjustering" av juntan.

Han ombads att infinna sig på "the Royal Thai Army Headquarters" i Bangkok söndagen den 4 Oktober 2015.

Han tvingades inte skriva på något dokument men militären påtalade att hans teckningar inte speglade verkligheten och kunde hota landets säkerhet, han måste nu vara försiktigare i sitt arbete.

Märkligt, inga skenavrättningar, kvävningar eller elchocker?

Det märkliga i mina och många andras ögon är nog att satir tecknare överhuvudtaget tas in för förhör av landets militär.

Men uppenbarligen ombads tecknaren att tänka över sitt tecknande och lyder han inte denna uppmaning ifrån juntan lär säkerligen hårdare tag vara aktuellt.

Fast jag trodde det var standard att man skulle skenavrättas och torteras? Eller det kanske bara gäller journalister?

The military dictatorship is prickly. It hates all and any criticism. Usually, this prickliness and intolerance has been justified in terms of national security. Lese majeste is defined not just as a “defamation” but as an act against national security. Protests threaten security. And so it goes on.

Apparently, the threats to national security now extend to cartoons in national newspapers.

Sakda Sae Iew, a well-known political cartoonist at the mas circulation Thai Rath has had to report to the “office of the assistant army chief on Sunday morning after being summoned by the National Council for Peace and Order [the military junta] for talks.” By “talks” we can interpret as threats.

On arrival, Sakda said “he had been ‘invited’ to meet the NCPO but did not know what would be discussed.” He knew, according to Prachatai, that it was another case of required “attitude adjustment” fo those considered to have “distorted facts about the regime” and that his cartoons “might affect national security.”

Yes, we know, this is banal and crazy for he draws cartoons! But that is where the military dictatorship has landed Thailand, in a swamp of stupidity and repression.

Sakda stated:

He stated that he will have “to be more careful from now on.” Self-censorship will now apply to cartoons. In this context, given that it is fearful of cartoons, we have found one that seems a reasonable representation of the junta.
