Death on the Mekong

Sharing a few beverages at my wife's friend's house on the Mekong River last night, a man ran up to our smallish party of a dozen people and said he was a fisherman on the river. He explained that he had just discovered a dead body caught in his fishing net. He asked if someone could call the police. We did. We asked the fisherman if he's sure the body was dead. He said there is no doubt. He also explained that he pulled the net and the body up onto the shore.
Immediately, about six of the party sped down to the river on their putt-putts -- cell phone cameras at the ready. My wife asked if I wanted to go. I declined. She didn't want to go either. A minute later we heard a siren coming. Then another.
An hour later, they started to return to the party with the gruesome details. Everyone gathered 'round for the gory details and i-report photographic evidence. Perfectly macabre. First two high-school girls told their tale. They shut up when their grandmother returned ten minutes later -- as she was the new authority. She described how the stiff body of a young teenage female was wrapped in the fishing net. The police suspected the girl was one of two teens reported missing earlier -- on a family outing from Nong Bua Lamphu to visit relatives in Nong Khai. They had gone missing from one of the many riverside recreation areas set up to escape the heat. The other girl was still missing, also presumed drowned.
To add to the inanity, as granny relayed her information, she playfully flicked and stroked the penis of her naked two-year-old grandson. Nobody even seemed to notice.
I felt like I was on another planet.
Finally, the old man of the group returned and granny clammed up. He was now the authority. Ten minutes after he'd shared every detail granny already told us, the joking started. Everyone was laughing and spooking each other with "ghost" stories and generally yucking it up. Everyone critiqued the cell-phone photos and the best was highly praised. Fishing net across the face close-up with tangled hair.
I watched in disbelief. My wife asked me what the problem was, and I told her to think for a minute about the family of this dead girl. Evidently, nobody had given it a moment's consideration. In my mind, this event cast a pall over my night. I became quiet and reflective and preferred to go home. For my hosts and the other party goers, it was a flicker of excitement. Not something to celebrate, but certainly something to liven up an otherwise staid, cliched, moram-music drunkfest.
