Det är inte tekniskt realistisk och väldigt riskfyllt om gatewayen skulle gå ner. Då detta skulle skärma av hela Thailand från övriga världen, med stora kostnader som följd. Det verkar som den paletten ramlat ner nu.

I dagens Bangkok Post kan man läsa ett inlägg av Atiya Achakulwisut "Contributing Editor" om juntans planer på en single gateway, hon tror att juntans planer kan resultera i ett bakslag liknande det Yingluck upplevde vid amnestiplanerna.

Do you know what the hullabaloo over the single internet gateway policy is reminding me of? It makes me think back to the disastrous blanket amnesty policy.
Considering how determined the military regime has been in proving the previous administration wrong, it's ironic that the men in green are behaving the same way with their political opponents.
What is more confounding is if the military leaders do enjoy the benefit of hindsight and see how the fundamentally wrong blanket amnesty bill ended up in misfortune, taking down the Yingluck government in the process, why is it rebooting this past mistake?

Jag tycker att hennes analys av Yinglucks fall är rimlig. Jag är däremot inte lika säker på frågan om antal GWs. Folk i allmänhet har ingen som helst aning om hur många GW ett land har mot Internet. Fråga er själva: hur många nationella GW finns i t.ex Sverige, Finland, Norge, Kambodja etc. etc? Någon som direkt kan svara?
Kanske kan dock frågan om att juntan vill kontrollera all trafik, med vad dom tror högre effektivitet, bli en fråga som rör upp känslor.
Nu har, vad jag förstår, juntan redan skrinlagt planerna på EN GW. Det ska bli intressant att följa detta.

A series of Cabinet Resolutions, signed 30 June, 21 July, 4 Aug. and 25 Aug., explicitly ordered relevant agencies to “urgently” install the single gateway. Under Thai law, Cabinet Resolutions are legally-binding government instructions. Their legality can only be repealed by another Cabinet Resolution.

Bangkok, Thailand — Tucked away in a coffee shop near Central Bangkok, Phannee Naksuk rushed behind her counter, sprinkling cinnamon on the foam of an iced latte that was beginning to wilt. All around, her dozen customers were stuck on smartphones or laptops, their faces illuminated in faint blue light inside the shady shop.
“This is normal,” she said, noting the near silence of her customers. “Some people come in, order one drink and then just sit and work for hours. When I opened up 11 months ago, I knew I had to have Wi-Fi. Customers just expect it now.”
Phannee’s business reliance on a decent Internet connection is part of the reason why she is so troubled by a recent government proposal to alter the very framework of the country’s Internet.
Thailand, whose Internet currently connects to the world wide web through multiple points, or gateways, is now considering consolidating all the gateways into one central government-controlled point. A move, the government says, to allow for easier monitoring and interception of materials deemed inappropriate.
“Why does the government want so much control over the people?” said Phannee.

Bangkok — Online activists announced last night they will launch a full-scale assault against the military government Tuesday after it ignored their demand it issue a cabinet resolution scrapping the single internet gateway policy.
After earlier giving an ultimatum of 12 days for the junta to formally cancel the project, the self-proclaimed “Thailand F5 Cyber Army” announced last night it will attack government websites and servers, and then escalate them weekly for the next month until such a resolution is issued.

Thailand's military government has scrapped a plan to create a single Internet gateway, a deputy prime minister said on Thursday, putting paid to a system aimed at allowing authorities to monitor content.
The plan to consolidate Thailand's 10 Internet gateways into one central government-controlled point had been one of the government's least popular ideas since it came to power following a bloodless coup last year.
Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, a former finance minister, said the plan had been halted.
"We will not talk about this any more. If we say we won't do it, we won't do it," Somkid said during an a economic forum in Bangkok.
