Bangkok interested in hosting F1 race
Thailand is hoping to launch a bid for hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix in coming years, according to the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB). Its President Akapol Sorasuchart says that is it now responding to requests by businesses to encourage such large sporting events in order to improve the country’s reputation.
As reported by the Bangkok Post, Sorasuchart explains that – with polital arguments now calming - the country’s standing would receive a boost in the eyes of foreign tourists, should it be able to attract and keep large sporting events.
In December last year, Mark Webber visited capital city Bangkok in order to perform a Red Bull street demonstration which brought in some 150,000 spectators. Akapol is taking into consideration the fact that Singapore sold approximately 120,000 tickets for its third night race in Marina Bay, with visitors flocking in and hotels being filled.
Thai officials also point out that Singapore was able to generate revenue from landing fees for private jets and helicopters as well as yachts.
“Building an F1 circuit is very costly but it would be useful after the races end,” Akapol says. “I think that street racing is interesting for Thailand because it involves lower investment. A good location would be Ratchadamnoen Avenue because it has a good atmosphere.”
