Juntan förbjuder Journalist att deltaga i Konferens om Pressfrihet som ska hållas i Finland, inte direkt överraskande eftersom just pressfrihet inte direkt är något som juntan har gjort sig kända för att gilla eller ställa sig bakom.

Junta bans journalist from attending press freedom day overseas

The Thai junta has prohibited a well-known anti-junta journalist of Khaosod English News from attending a conference on World Press Freedom Day in Finland.

Pravit Rojanaphruk, 48, a well-known anti-junta journalist from Khaosod English, on Wednesday morning, 30 March 2016, posted a message on his Facebook profile that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) had prohibited him from attending a conference on World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, to be held in Finland.

He was invited by the Foreign Ministry of Finland to attend the conference.

Pravit told Prachatai that he submitted a document to ask for permission from the NCPO to travel overseas on 16 March. However, he was informed this morning by Lt Col Adisak Chiwichian that the journey must be postponed; in other words he is not permitted to attend the conference.  

“Junta rep. just rang me at 9 am saying the junta won't let me travel to Helsinki per invitation of the Finnish Foreign Ministry to observe World Press Freedom Day. If they think their carrot and stick tactic will work, then they must be mistaken as I am resolute to carry out my duty to scrutinize and criticize them without fear or favour,” Pravit wrote on his Facebook status.

He told Prachatai that the ban might be related to a Facebook picture of him putting up a middle finger against the first draft constitution, which was used in an article published on Prachatai written by him.

After the article was published, Khaosod executives were pressured by the authorities and he had requested Prachatai to remove the picture from the article, added Pravit.

Pravit was twice summoned by the NCPO for so-called attitude adjustment sessions.

He said that he was still able to travel overseas after he was freed from his first attitude adjustment session and this is the first time that he has been barred by the NCPO from travelling overseas.

Finnarna har en historia att förstöra saker. Kolla bara på hockey-VM 1995, snacka om att sabba festen(med en svensk Quisling dessutom). Och spjutkastning ska vi inte tala om, där sabbar de ju all spänning.

 

Nä, thaiarna gör rätt i att hålla sig hemma. Inget gott kan komma ur att beblanda sig med detta opålitliga folkslag.....:big_smile:

Jag är rätt säker på att juntan förbjuder honom att åka för hans egen hälsas skull, han skulle aldrig klarat av en konferens med Jarmo, Pentti och de andra grabbarna...

Thai military authorities have rejected a veteran journalist's application to attend a conference in Finland on May 3 for World Press Freedom Day.

Pravit Rojanaphruk, a correspondent for Khaosod English News and a known critic of the junta, posted several updates on social media about his failure to get a permission from the government to leave the country. He was supposed to go to Helsinki, in order to join other journalists in a global event organized by UNESCO.

Since the May 2014 coup, Pravit has consistently criticized Thailand's military dictatorship. He was twice summoned and detained by the army for a few days to undergo “attitude-adjustment” in a military camp, but he's continued his critical reporting about the state's activities. No charges were filed against him, but he was “advised” to stop spreading “confusing” information about the government. He was also told that he cannot leave the country without the approval of the state.

The army grabbed power in 2014, drafted an interim constitution, and vowed to restore civilian rule after reforms are implemented in the country. Two years later, the army is still in control, media is strictly regulated, and public protests are banned. Pravit is one of the few public voices still criticizing the dictatorial character of the military-backed government.

Finland beklagar att Thailands nuvarande regim nekade den Thailändske Journalisten Pravit Rojanaphruk att resa till Finland för att deltaga i UNESCO,s Pressfrihets dag och konferens i Helsingfors.

 Finska PEN, Reporters Without Borders i Finland, Finnish Foundation for Media and Development Vikes och Journalisternas Fackförbund i Finland kräver att Pravit Rojanaphruk ska tillåtas deltaga i konferensen, även Kirsti Westphalen som är Finland’s ambassadör i Thailandhar uttryckt sitt beklagande över juntans beslut.

Finnish organizations promoting freedom of expression are disappointed in Thailand’s government’s decision to ban journalist Pravit Rojanaphruk from travelling to Finland. Rojanaphruk was invited to participate in UNESCOs Press Freedom Day conference in Helsinki during May 2–4 2016. Finnish PEN, Reporters Without Borders in Finland, Finnish Foundation for Media and Development Vikes and Union of Journalists in Finland are demanding Pravit Rojanaphruk to be allowed to participate in the conference. Kirsti Westphalen, Finland’s ambassador to Thailand, has also expressed her regret in Thai authorities’ decision.
 
“A journalist participating in International Press Freedom Day can’t possess any kind of real threat to his home country. This ban is a punishment targeted to a single professional. Also, it is a blow on freedom of expression. According to the PEN International charter, free expression requires free movability and exchange of thoughts and the right to criticize governments and institutions”, says author Sirpa Kähkönen, president of Finnish PEN.
 
Pravit Rojanaphruk, who contributes to Khaosod English media outlet, is known as a keen defender of freedom of expression, who hasn’t shied away from criticizing Thailand’s military junta: The National Council of Peace and Order’s (NCPO) coup d’état took place in May 2014. He’s been particularly critical towards Thailand’s lèse-majesté law and has been arrested twice. Pravit Rojanaphruk worked over two decades for the newspaper The National but lost his job due to the pressure received by the paper after his detention. The lèse-majesté law is against the main principles of freedom of expression and an efficient way to silence media.
 
Background information
 
NCPO has sustained ”peace and order” in Thailand by martial law that was revoked in March 2015. Media is still being strictly controlled and censorship reaches Internet. Journalists, dissidents, researchers, human rights activists and artists are being silenced. If not committing to self-censorship, the climate of fear is being created by handing fines and through arbitrary detention. Writers are arrested, imprisoned and they disappear solely for practicing their legal right to peacefully express their opinions.
 
Thailand is a state party to International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which protects the legal right in expressing one’s opinion. PEN demands Thailand to fulfil its international obligations in protecting freedom of expression, to stop harassing writers and free the imprisoned writers.
