Internet forums which are dedicated to shared hobbies and interests tend thrive but most forums with general topics such as this one go through a four stage life cycle similar to a product life style:
Stage 1 – Introduction. Everyone is positive. People are excited to get to know other members. Everything is great. The members are having fun. They feel this is their forum and they feel they belong to a new group of friends.
Stage 2 – Growth. The forum is going from strength to strength with many new members and lots of interesting posts.
Stage 3 – Maturity. Resentments start to build up. Members who originally felt they were part of a special community start to feel drowned out by the new members. Some older members get jealous of new members popularity and want to keep things as they were. Assholes start coming on to stoke the fires of resentment. The in fights become more popular reading than interesting topics. Attention whores start fights. An inner sanctum clique develops. New members are vetted and checked to see if they can be part of the “in-gang”. Many new members are considered outsiders and “oddballs” Complaints about the moderators start.
Stage 4 – Decline. People start leaving particularly the mature members who don’t enjoy the juvenile spats. The dedicated assholes take over. More people leave. The moderators become dictatorial because they are fed up and burnt out. Flame wars take over. The board dies because any new topics, ideas or viewpoints are vilified by the dedicated clique of the inner sanctum.
