Hej

Diplomats invited to observe rally

Diplomats and representatives of the mass media, independent agencies and other organisations have been invited to observe the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order's handling of the rally of protesters of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) led by Suthep Thaugsuban at Government House tomorrow, Capo spokesman Piya Uthayo said on Sunday.

The PDRC has announced its "final battle" against the "Thaksin regime" in which it will stage a huge rally at Government House Monday. Columns of protesters organised by the PDRC will start to move from nine different spots at 9.39am to Government House.

Pol Maj Gen Piya said Capo would seek to hold talks with the protesters to prevent deaths or injuries as well as damage to public property.

The diplomatic corps and representatives of the media, independent agencies and various other organisations have been invited to observe the security operations of the authorities under the supervision of Capo at the rally site as well as vantage points manned by police, particularly inside the Government House compound, he said.

Capo's announcement immediately drew a protest from the Democrat Party.

Ong-art Klampaiboon, a Democrat Party list MP, said Capo should not invite diplomats from various embassies in Bangkok to observe its work because the situation could turn violent and be harmful to them.

If this happened, the government must be held responsible, he said.

Mr Ong-art said the rally was motivated by the government's mistakes in its administration. They included corruption and abuse use of the majority vote in the House of Representatives. Moreover, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was not the country's real leader but a puppet.

He said the government had spurned the protesters' proposals and intimidated the protest leaders and their supporters by threatening to take legal action against them and trying to damage their legitimacy.

Mr Ong-art asked Ms Yingluck to do as promised to both the Thai and foreign media that she was ready to do everything to bring the situation back to normal including dissolving the House of Representatives and resigning as prime minister.

Diplomats cautious on govt invitation

Many embassies showed reluctance on Sunday to attend the government's invitation to observe security arrangements to control the mass rally heading for Government House on Monday.

So far only Cambodia and Malaysia have indicated they will send diplomats to observe the security operation, according to sources at the two embassies.
