Apishits koalition hotar att spricka och det är inte helt oväntat korruption som är problemet, så det ska bli spännande att se vad han väljer, att blunda för uppenbar korruption men behålla sina koalitions partners, eller motarbeta korruptionen i regeringen med risk för att koalitionen spricker, Bhumjaithai Party och deras ledare Newin Chidchob hotar att lämna koalitionen om deras korruption utreds.

Abhisit faces a tough choice

"The pressure is building quickly on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to make a decision about the scandalous behaviour of some of his close colleagues. Mr Abhisit cannot plead that he did not realise this day would come. The charges about Bhumjaithai Party ministers and especially the de facto leader Newin Chidchob are as old as his coalition government _ Dec 17, 2008. The situation within the Interior Ministry has now become a heavy liability upon Mr Abhisit, his government and his Democrat Party. The premier faces a hard choice, but it will hardly get easier if he continues to put it off.
The crisis of the moment revolves around Chavarat Charnvirakul. He is the nominal leader of Bhumjaithai, because Mr Newin was barred from direct involvement in politics in 2007. He also is the interior minister, and there is no ministry at the moment involved in more uproar. Mr Chavarat has specifically become the centre of investigations into a questionable computer leasing scheme worth 3.49 billion baht. The plan to set up a computer network for the Provincial Administration Department is on hold, effectively cancelled, while the Department of Special Investigation investigates.
But more generally, the Bhumjaithai conduct at the ministry has been shocking. The appearance is that Mr Abhisit ceded interior to Bhumjaithai as the price for getting their support to form a government in early 2009. It has been known as a ''political ministry'' in the past, with less than savoury deals, kickbacks and allegations of even worse behaviour. Under Mr Chavarat _ one can equally say under Mr Newin, who pulls all Bhumjaithai strings _ the ministry has served up one political scandal after another.
Mr Newin's younger brother is a senior political appointee. Over the past few months, a serious political drama has played out, as Mr Newin and Mr Chavarat attempted to appoint Mongkol Surasajja, a friend of the Bhumjaithai leaders, as permanent secretary. More experienced bureaucrats protested. As the scandal grew over the weekend, Mr Mongkol decided to step aside, but if he thought that would deflect the problems, he was mistaken."
